The New Nature
Commissioned by the City of Lethbridge and the Allied Arts Council, “The New Nature” was completed and installed in 2022. My objective was to create a public artwork which is both innovative and inventive, while adding a contemporary aesthetic and cultural value to the City of Lethbridge. I aimed to create a mosaic comprised of large and small tiles as well as small mirrored tile pieces, providing a compelling entrance to Legacy Park.
This artwork can also be appreciated close-up when it reflects the movement of the sun and the changing scenery it faces. I envisioned this being a work that the community could appreciate over the course of their lives, discovering new shapes in the design and new ways in which the glaze and mirrors light up depending on the day and the weather.
With few distinctive characteristics, larger tiles of human silhouettes and birds are familiar symbols which can be a canvas for the viewer’s thoughts. Decorating this shared space in such a way invites visitors to adopt an inclusive and exploratory attitude.
